Maid cafes in Akiba, Nietzsche would be dancing in his grave!

In America, simply no girl smiles at you. The only place where girls smile at you wholeheartedly is Starbucks. That’s why I always to go Starbucks, and see a girl smile at me, and have a very short term of instant gratification of being recognized.Yes, I perfectly know that they are trained to smile at customers, and I’m just a customer to her. But still, while no girl smiles at me in real life, I get to have a little humble pleasure from being smiled at this coffee shop, or this globally franchised cafe. I always smile at girls, but usually my humble favor is not returned or simply ignored here in the United States of America, or I should say NAFTA. Sometimes, I resort to a speculation that this might be due to racism because I’m an Asian boy, but that is hardly a case because racism was defeated by Obama’s historical election in 2008. So, since 2008, racism is dead. So, I would think that it’s simply that American services in general are DMV quality.

Now I’ve got used to dystopic America too much, where all shops except for Starbucks are like DMV. Yes, their service is really crappy. They treat you like cattle before being sent to slaughterhouses. Buta-don (Pig bowl) of Silver Spoon even got better love than us. I don’t think they see me as a valuable customer who is helping them to feed their family. When they say “thank you,” there is no emotion attached, and no smile at all.

So, I wanted to go to a cafe, yes, where girls smile at you. Yes, the ultimate one is needless to say that maid cafe in Akiba! So, I went to Akiba with high expectations that they would be far better than Starbucks. As my maidology study tour, trying to emulate our Anime Diet maidologist The PaperContinue reading Maid cafes in Akiba, Nietzsche would be dancing in his grave!

Rage against Hollywooders

From ANN –

Kirsten Dunst Cosplays in Akihabara for Video

…actress Kirsten Dunst appeared in Tokyo’s Akihabara otaku shopping district in a sailor-suit costume and a blue wig for a video directed by McG (Terminator Salvation).

Ray’s Take: Uh…I’m going to channel Buffy’s sister and go: “GET OUT GET OUT GET OUT GET OUT!” XD

I thought we had a mainstream fascination with Japanese culture back in the ’80s! What the hell? Now they have to invade Akiba, too? Sheesh, you made it as mainstream ippanjin, and so we do not welcome you anywhere near our territory. I’ve stated that many times. There is the ippanjin section, out you leave. NOW! Sheesh. Like I’d believe what a Hollywooder says about liking Akiba.

A Pause for the Akihabara Dead

From the New York Times:

TOKYO – A 25-year-old man “tired” of life went on a killing rampage in a busy shopping area in central Tokyo on Sunday, plowing his truck into a crowd of pedestrians before stabbing passers-by with a survival knife. Seven people died and 11 others were injured in the attack.

The attack took place shortly after noon on a main thoroughfare that had been closed off to vehicles for the day in Akihabara, the main district for electronic goods in Tokyo and a magnet for fans of Japanese anime and manga comics. The location, as well as the number of fatalities, stunned a country that has long enjoyed low crime rates but has recently experienced random stabbings in less-high-profile areas.

The police identified the attacker as Tomohiro Kato, who was living by himself in a small apartment in Shizuoka, a prefecture just west of Tokyo.

According to the Japanese media, Mr. Kato told the police that he had grown “tired” of life, “hated the world” and had gone to Akihabara to kill people.

“Anyone was O.K.,” he told the police, according to the Japanese media.

This mass murderer hit people like us in the place we would have felt safest. Especially with people who are typically not the most aggressive in society. That’s why it hurts so much, and we at Anime Diet send our thoughts, prayers, and grief to the epicentre and the birthplace of so much of our entertainment and joy.

It’s hard not to wonder, like I did initially during the Virginia Tech shootings (which took place in an Engineering building), whether this is something of a “geek hate crime” aimed specifically at otaku. From what we know now, it doesn’t appear to be, just as it wasn’t in VTech. The killer appears to be connected to the yakuza, and said “anyone would do.” It takes a special kind of callousness, I think, to simply pick out purely random victims, each of whom have names, have stories, have families and friends.

Sometimes in our concentration on our various anime and manga fantasies, we forget there are real people producing it, real people buying it. May all otaku worldwide unite in mourning and in solidarity with our fallen brothers and sisters in fandom.

These are the seven dead (from ANN):

  • Katsuhiko Nakamura (male, 74 years old)
  • Kazunori Fujino (male, 19)
  • Kasuhiro Koiwa (male, 47)
  • Naoki Miyamoto (male, 31)
  • Takahiro Kawaguchi (male, 19)
  • Mai Mutō (female, 21)
  • Mitsuru Matsui (male, 33)

As a minister-to-be, I would like to offer the same prayer that I offered after the Virginia Tech massacre, from the Book of Common Prayer.

Today we are reminded, O God, of the slaughter of the holy innocents of Bethlehem by King Herod. Receive, we pray, into the arms of your mercy all innocent victims; and by your great might frustrate the designs of evil ones and establish your rule of justice, love and peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

One more step closer to jacking into terminals/decks/each other…Oops

Actually this has been done, but –

Tokyo’s Akihabara District to Test Electronic Guides

Akihabara, Tokyo’s shopping district for electronics and popular culture, will test a new electronic guide system that uses free IC (integrated circuit) cards and street-mounted data terminals starting October 19.

Ray’s take:  I figured it’d start in Akiba. Next thing you know, underground access terminals for information on cosplay enko, uncensored hentai live, and special service cosplay cafes…Oh wait, we each have an “underground terminal” right in our homes already…Have fun fighting over these cards!

Hirano Aya’s latest event at Akiba

From Anime/manga news at eNet (China)

Hirano Aya will be in the “LOVE★GUN Live!! Spokesperson event presented by RADIO animation MIX”, sponsored by Dwango on 10/20 in Akiba, Tokyo…

…It’s free and no preregistration is required…

Date and time: 18:10 (6:10 PM) on October 20th, 2007

Place 2F UDX Building in AKIBA SQUARE, Akihabara, Tokoy

Performance by Hirano Aya, and 鹫崎健氏(MC)

[Editor’s note: all of above translated from Chinese and I can’t translate the MC’s name because I don’t know the romanji for it.]

Ray’s take: if you will be there at that time, lucky you. I recommend staking out the day before and try to hang around until the event starts. Anybody asks questions speak very fast in English and they’ll go away soon enough. Just don’t make a scene and show them that foreign Otaku have even more manners than their home grown variety!

The J-bands are coming! The J-bands are coming!

From Anime Corporation News

Salia, Psychic Lover to Perform in Virginia

Salia and Psychic Lover will be performing at the Akiba Fest J-Pop Halloween Concert at the Jaxx Nightclub in Springfield, Virginia on October 27. Salia is known for the anime theme songs of Cutey Honey Flash and Vandread, the Psychic Lover J-Pop duo is known for the theme songs to Witchblade and Transformers Armada.

Ray’s take: Again, who? But at least Otaku there can all cosplay without being treated like freaks. Good times.
