Anime Diet Radio Episode 18 – Don’t Try This At Home

Anime Diet Radio finally graduates and comes into its maturity in this, our 18th and our first Jeremy-less episode in a while. (He had a toothache.) We’re doing DANGEROUS things that you shouldn’t try at home: like the Indonesian boy who imitated Naruto too much and spreading the Clannad virus! And we also talk about this season’s anime like Gunslinger Girl Il Teatrino, Rosario + Vampire, True Tears, Shigofumi, and They are My Noble Masters.

This was, as you will hear, recorded two weeks ago on Super Bowl Sunday. It is actually Take 2 of Episode 18, which because of computer problems described in the Introduction, we had to scrap. I still think this was a good episode, though, and I hope you’ll agree!

Erratum: the drink referred to that had a commercial in the Superbowl is not called Volt, but Amp. As you can see I did not do well in the electricity unit of high school physics. :) You can see the original Super Bowl commercial here (1). Note the warning at the bottom!

Gunslinger Girl II Ep 06 – The nightmare that was episode 1…

…Is officially over (for me at least). Not only the plot has picked up but the tension between the sides and the characters has picked up dramatically. It just feels like watching two different shows or watching 2 different halves of a ball game in which the home team is making a dramatic come back. We see conflicts, small or big, for different characters. We see the different morals for different characters. We also see how there aren’t simple good guys or bad guys.

We also see the impossible – that Italy has the best artificial limb technology – sorry but that ain’t gonna happen any time soon – perhaps. But that’s not the point here.

What is the right thing to do? Does doing the right thing means killing lots of people? How can the right thing be done? experimenting with kids? Use any means necessary even killing an innocent girl next door? No elderly and no kids? Kill all enemies?

When a show gets me thinking about all these issues that means it has won me over. I can overlook some of the coincidences and how the Social Welfare Agency is practically invincible when the characters are done so well and their conflicts are vividly portrayed. This show is on its way to an A+.

Gunslinger Girl II Ep 3 – finally some improvements coming to sight

Yeah, yeah, OK, so it’s better than episode one.

We have Triela reading the story of Pinocchio; we have she being traumatized and wondering about her life, and we have decent gun fighting sequence and fighting sequence.

I’m sure many others said something about this episode already. All I’ve gotta say is – KEEP THIS UP, PLEASE.

But nothing will save the OP and the ED song. And NOTHING will save the seiyuu’s voices. The blushing part of Triela looks so high school anime drama. What, now she’s a tsundere?

Ikari “Mike” Gendo shall drool!

But, thank god the dramatic factor is now up! Now I can kind of looking forward to episode 4. But  cut that moe from Gunslinger Girl!!!!!!

(Crossing my fingers…)

Gunslinger Girl – Il Teatrino – bad, graphic novel, cheaper, and subpar.

Oh and don’t forget the rather generic dating-sim-turn-anime music, too.

There are a lot of dating sim graphic novels with different themes. This show could very well be one of them…Wait a minute!

Isn’t this supposed to be the anime continuation of Gunslinger Girl, the often poignant, high production quality with emotional restraint and yet often hits so hard show? Isn’t it?

But God! This just felt so…cheap and low budgeted.

The animation is nothing to write home about, the music pieces sound like they’re from a 3rd rate school dating sim, and the voice actresses…Gosh, isn’t the whole anime industry moe enough already??? Do they have to go and destroy Gunslinger Girl, too? The original wonderful soundtrack and the bitter and tear worthy ending song, gone; replaced with school drama songs that don’t touch most people’s souls any more because they’re so common place in anime.

Why not put Henrietta, Jose, and the rest of them in a Japanese high school? A high school with guns, perhaps?

Where’s the poignancy? Where’s the drama? Where’s the point where tears seems awfully appropriate but something chokes them off?

Yeah, yeah, yeah, don’t tell me this is only the first episode. This is the first episode that starts off with the wrong foot and seemingly heading toward disaster.

IT’S A BAD SHOW. If it doesn’t improve (but the animation, seiyuu, OP and ED won’t change right), then please, don’t waste your time.
