Vinland Saga is about Vikings, and Swords.

Yes. Big muscular vikings with cool-looking helmets, beer, and swords.

But sometimes they carry axes. Really big axes. And they swing it. Often.

Vikings come from England, Greenland, Norway, and Iceland. They believe that if they die on the battlefield they go to Valhalla. In Valhalla they drink wine, and eat meat, and fight. Paradise.

Did you know that in the 11th century England was a hodgepodge of little kingdoms, defenseless and weak like a forest of dry trees in front of a raging fiery inferno?

London, for example, was merely a small trading town protected by its fortified bridge. The bridge was placed over a river. Vikings liked to visit places in boats. Boats traveled on seas and rivers. Hence the nursery rhyme: “London bridge is falling down, falling down, falling down, falling down, London bridge is falling down la de la de la.”

….

In Viking society, brain power is inversely proportional to muscular mass, and the Vikings were VERY muscular people. They needed it to carry their gigantic swords and battle axes. And wear their cool-looking helmets.

The strongest of the Vikings were the Jomvikings. They were the Vikings of the Vikings and some of them were berserkers. The berserkers were Vikings who would eat mushrooms in battle. These mushrooms would make them psychotically, and painfully unhappy. Very unhappy. VERY unhappy.

But Vinland Saga is not about berserkers. It is about a boy called Thorifinn, son of Thor and a man called Askeladd, who killed both of their fathers. And a Prince called Canute, who grows up in a big way.

There are… er, I mean, there were Christians in the story. A theme of the manga is the warriors of Valhalla meets the converts of Jesus. Get it? GET IT? GET IT??????????? (Take that you English literary professors and behold my wonderful analysis).

Stay tuned for the next exciting episode of VINLAND SAGA!
