Mike’s Winter 2009 Bandwagon Preview Post

So…uh…I guess the fall season’s over. What’s up next on the menu next season? Summaries and info courtesy of THAT.

There seems to be an awful lot of continuations and third seasons to shows I never completed, so I’ll have to skip over those. With that in mind, here we go.

Kemono no Souja Erin

This one is based on the work of Uehashi Nahoko, who also wrote the highly-regarded (though I still haven’t watched it) Seirei no Moribito (Guardian of the Sacred Spirit). It’s Production IG, which should mean good animation and music. It also looks like this is going to go on for the rest of the year–50 episodes!–so I’ll see how long it lasts before the filler kicks in.

This looks…wild. It’s about a boy-shy girl who enters a girls’ school to date girls and ends up dating a girl who is…really a boy.

AND it’s directed by none other than our friend Akiyuki Shinbo of SHAFT. You know, he of Pani Poni Dash and Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei. The king of anime surreal.

This could be the weird special of the season, or, knowing Shinbo, it could go into the abyss of the deepest insanity seen since Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei. It deserves to be watched for the curiosity factor alone.

White Album

Probably won’t be blogged by me. But I think I know who will, and why!

I have to admit the OP to the game, which is shown above, is quite catchy. The premise reminds me of REC. But I’m calling BS if this show is any less good than the album of the same name by the Beatles!

Sora o Kakeru Shoujo (The Girl Who Leapt into the Sky)

Despite its title similarity to my favorite anime film of 2007, I don’t expect it to be nearly that great. This is an original series by Sunrise, in the vein of Mai Hime (which I liked) and Code Geass, and looks like a buddy/cop actioner with a mostly female cast. The THAT people are looking forward to some yuri, which may get one of our other bloggers excited, too.

genji.jpg

Genji Monogatari Sennenki (The Tale of Genji)

There’s usually one historical fiction title per season, and this one is it. I really ought to read the original Tale of Genji first, though. We’ll see. Especially since they only gave themselves a measly 11 episodes to do it.

  1. Yes, Erin is also probably going to be highly regarded, but that might just disappoint even more if IG fails to bring it through. Further it is for 50 episodes, but I do have faith that at least it will carry through, so it is definitely on my watchlist. So is Sorakake, let us hope Sunrise does not mess it up. -_-

  2. Hey Mike, dont tell my none of you guys are waiting for Hajime no Ippo? You know the old boxing anime, it was one hell of an anime. Hoping you guys will blog it.

  3. @panther: I hope so too. And Sunrise’s track record is spotty, to say the least. Then again, if it’s a lovely train wreck like Code Geass we may have just the reviewer for it…

@stephen007: the principal blog writers aren’t really sports anime/manga people, but I’ll ask if anyone is interested on staff to write about it.

  4. Souka, thats bad. Im not really into sports anime too, i just watched Slam Dunk back when i was like 12 but now im 20 i dont find it that awesome anymore. But hajime no ippo is so cool, it has alot of humor as well, the BGM is excelent too. I really hope you guys blog this and hear you guys talk about it at your podcasts.

  5. @stephen007: you sure you don’t work for the studio that made Hajime no Ippo? 🙂 We’ll see. Our podcaster Jeremy does watch sports stuff a lot more than Ray and I do, he might check it out and talk about it in future eps of the podcast at least!

  6. I call dibs on Erin and Genji.

As a matter of fact I’ve read the first dozen or so chapters of Genji.

  7. katanakaji: well this one is kinda old for one 🙂 I never finished most of the ones on here so it’s hard for me to say. See if you like the plot concepts of some of them and try them out.
