PMX 2009 Twitter Digest – Day 2 (Saturday)

See day 1’s digest here. The Nabeshin videos will take just a little longer to edit. ;)

I am standing across the hall from Nabeshin. The fan panel is supposed to start soon but Uchusentai is overtime.

Nabeshins next project: an Anime about a character named Nabeshin who takes over the world.

They picked him to direct Wallflower because he is number one in sex appeal and in humor.

Nabeshin panel over. What a laugh riot. Definitely the funniest person I’ve seen so far that works in Anime.

I was struck by how few people were in the panel though. The room was packed for Uchusentai but barely half full for Nabeshin.

Exclusive: Yukana PMX Interview Transcript

L to R: Yukana, translator–and me (Fred hides behind me)

Anime Diet is again proud to present an exclusive interview, this time with the voice actress Yukana. She’s well known for her role as CC in Code Geass, Tessa Testarossa in Full Metal Panic, and characters in Chobits and numerous other shows. Throughout the interview, as well as in the fan panel (we missed the press conference), she was dressed in a long, dark velvet dress, and was simultaneously reserved and cheerful in answering questions. Her natural speaking voice may surprise you, unless, like me, you’re a Tessa Testarossa fan. Because that is who she sounds most like in real life! Kind of like how Hirano Aya sounds even more girlish than Haruhi Suzumiya in real life.

The interview was held on Saturday, November 10, 2007. This transcript is of a private interview, not a press conference, and perhaps ironically, that meant we spent a shorter amount of time with her than we did with the Claymore staff. But–we still got our delicious endorsement anyway! In Japanese, too.

(BTW, this is the only video you’ll be getting. We were requested to not display anything else in public. Sorry.)

Jeremy, myself, and Fred–who understands basic Japanese–were present. As in the Claymore staff interview, it was done through an interpreter, who translated in the third person, which is accurately transcribed here. The interview was edited for conciseness and clarity. And no, tj_han, there is no real juicy gossip for you. You’ll have to ask another reporter for that. :)

Coming soon: reports from the fan panels for both Yukana and Claymore staff, a video diary like the Anime Expo ones, and a final written report.

Exclusive: Claymore Staff PMX 2007 Press Conference Transcript

L to R: translator, Umehara, Tanaka

Anime Diet is proud to present the transcript of questions our staff (Jeremy and myself) asked the director and character designer of the Claymore anime, Hiroyuki Tanaka and Takahiro Umehara! The interview took place at PMX on Sunday, November 11, 2007, at 5 PM. It was attended only by ourselves and one other reporter, so we were able to ask most of the questions that you, the readers, requested (others were answered in the fan panel). We even have a little endorsement of sorts from them! Just like Mike Huckabee with Chuck Norris, we are now Claymore-approved.

The Youtube link above does not constitute an endorsement of Mike Huckabee. Despite the fact that he shares my first name.

This transcript is edited for clarity and conciseness. The translator for both of them translated in both first and third persons, but mostly in the latter. To preserve the character of the interview, all answers have been written in third person (e.g., “he says…”) Only questions that Anime Diet staff asked were transcribed.

Thanks to Jinnie at the PMX press office for arranging this conference!

Coming in a few days: a transcript and pictures of our private interview with Yukana.

A Taster of Our PMX Coverage…

Here are a few of the fruits of our full-on coverage of Claymore staff, and just a small teaser of our Yukana coverage. Forthcoming, hopefully this week: interview and press conference transcripts for both, as well as the usual video diary. Just like with AX, you know? Only this con was a lot more relaxing on the whole.
Me being stereotypical

Hiroyuki Tanaka, director of Claymore–with a present for me!

Smile, Claymore character designer Takahiro Umehara. You’re on Candid Camera

Ray, Yukana has a present for you!

Readers: What Would You Ask the Director and Chara Designer of Claymore?

Here we go indeed…to journalistic bliss

We got our press passes and permission to interview Yukana yesterday, the first day of PMX! We also have a good chance of scoring a private interview with the director (Hiroyuki Tanaka) and character designer (Takahiro Umehara) of Claymore on Sunday, and we’d like to know if there’s anything you Claymore fans out there would like us to ask them. (We know you’re out there. Don’t hold back on us. :)) I have a few questions myself.

Leave your suggestions here in the comment section of this post. Thanks!

Readers: What Would You Ask Yukana?

Hi everyone,

Anime Diet may have the golden opportunity to actually get a private interview with Yukana! In case we do, we’d like to know from you, our readers, what you would want to know about her and her work. Leave your questions in the comments section.

We reserve the right, of course, to use the ones we think are most fitting. And remember that there are still no guarantees. Plus, we have our own questions we want to formulate. But this is your chance to ask something of a seiyuu and possibly get a response!

Thanks for your feedback, everyone. We’re really excited about PMX. See you at the con!

Our PMX Plans

Jeremy and his wife Heather, Fred, and I are all going to the Pacific Media Expo (PMX) tomorrow with press passes! Friday, however, does not look like an especially busy day, so I’m not sure how busy we will be on that day–though I will be toting the video camera to record fan interviews like I did for AX.

What’s exciting about this con is that the emerging press passes give us access to certain press conferences as well as privileged areas to take pictures during the fan panels. Personally, I am only interested in two major panels in order to ask questions:

  • Yukana (Saturday: press conference at 3:00 pm; panel at 4:30-5:30 pm)
  • Claymore‘s Takahiro Umehara and Hiroyuki Tanaka (Sunday, 2-4 pm; press conference at 5:00pm)

I’m also somewhat interested in a last-minute addition–James Kyson Lee, the actor who plans Ando-kun in NBC’s splendid show Heroes. He has a panel and autograph session too. Now, I’ve only seen the majority of season 1, and so I can’t ask terribly intelligent questions about the story, but I think he’s a great sarcastic sidekick to Hiro. Watching Hiro and Ando in that show, especially with its slapstick, sometimes reminds me of watching anime comedy. I’m rather amused and disturbed that I often understand their dialogue because I’ve watched so much anime!

So–now, here’s your last minute turn to tell us what you’re interested in. If you have questions you’d like us to try to ask Yukana and the Claymore staff, please let us know here. A lot of J-rock bands I’ve never heard of are also coming, and they are often open not just for press conferences but private interviews, along with some American voice actors (including the one I despise most, Spike Spencer, ruiner of Evangelion. :-p). If by chance we have time and I manage to slip into the panel or press conference, post some potential questions here too. Needless to say, there are no guarantees on anything–we only have a emerging (ie “Junior”) press pass this year, so we can’t automatically get exclusive interviews or even the best seats in the panels yet. But the potential is pretty good.

Thanks everyone. See you at the (small) con!

I need to send Teresa to “exorcise” my host provider

The Claymore director and chara designer PMX panel isn’t until Sunday, so I have a few more days to spend watching this show before I get to go to their panel. :) (If you have questions you’d like asked, please leave them in the comments section.) Plus, we just came back from a major outage all day, so bear with us as I make the second post for today…which is about the evolution this show is taking by its halfway marker.

Our Tokyopop Profile (and a test post…)

Hi everyone, as you probably noticed, we got a few review copies of books from Tokyopop recently! (Thanks, Katie. We’re happy to include you as one of our fans!) We have also been invited to open a profile on Tokyopop’s website, which promises to get us more readers by tapping into the Tokyopop community. Check out our budding profile, which doesn’t have too much material right now but soon will:

http://tokyopop.com/animediet

There is another nefarious purpose to this post, though: we would like to mirror the blog’s posts on the Tokyopop profile blog section via the feed. In order to confirm this, I need to put this code in: f7dd6465a3d79a4c874c78b73eb30cb6 . . .  at first I tried to do it in a comment, until I realized that comments aren’t included in the feed I’m trying to include. So there was no other way to do it except right out here in the open with a complete explanation of what the heck I’m doing.

So for those of you who are fans of Tokyopop’s social networking community, I look forward to seeing you there! Stay tuned for further plans about Pacific Media Expo (PMX) too.

Mike’s Claymore Marathon Journal: Eps. 3-7

claymore3-2.jpg

I’m going to PMX this weekend along with the rest of the US crew–and so is Claymore‘s director and character designer, Hiroyuki Tanaka and Takahiro Umehara! As a matter of journalistic research and integrity, I’ve decided to watch the rest of Claymore, which I barely started when it was being broadcast, in rapid mini-marathons until the end of the week when they are set to do their panels at PMX. And I’ve decided to blog about it too, since what is an anime blog if not a record of what has been watched?  This is for episodes 3-7.
