M;Y Writer 1: The anime bloggers are getting bored of all the conventional tearjerking drama. We’ve got lots of plotlines to resolve in just three more episodes. We just concluded the Higurashi rip off story, too, which was all we had left up our sleeve. Plus, the Hinako fans are getting impatient. What do we do?
M;Y Writer 2: Oh, I know how to spice things up. Let’s add vengeful bi drama! And twincest! And teary eyed, sudden farewells that gratuitously echo scenes from episode 1 because that’ll bring ’em to tears! Watch out ef! You’re going down!!!! [pants with excitement] What do you think?
M;Y Writer 1: Uh…well, that is…surprising, to say the least. You sure they’re gonna buy that though?
Time for today’s Moment of the Season, brought to you by the Anime Blogging Collective and a dozen others! Today, I bring you a turning point that signals not only a change in that particular show’s mood but a reflection of what has happened to anime fandom’s expectations in the past half year.
Previews and blog rumors aren’t so reliable after all. My fears about this episode were largely unfounded, though it has other sets of problems alongside some relatively strong material. Even if this is really talking about three relatively unrelated plot threads, this ain’t filler; don’t skip it.
You know, I haven’t blogged about this show in a while, but I caught up over Thanksgiving weekend. And you know, after episodes 7 and especially this one, 8…and after watching ef episode 7…scenes like this mean something pretty dramatic to me now.
