Aku No Hana Episode 7

Nakamura

That triumph. By which I mean, the triumph of women over men. Nakamura-san annuls the contract which should have caused Kasuga to scream in joy like MLM making skinship with Kana-chan a reality. Instead he is devastated. His expression, his defeated, no, relinquished spirit as he kneels pathetically on the classroom floor cements his submission of himself to her, man to woman.

Marx is certainly not wrong when he claimed that history is the struggle between the haves and the have nots but it may be even more accurate to say the same for women and men. Dating back to The Wife of Bath’s Tale, Chaucer made a case for female dominance centuries prior.

However, it’s not simply flowers we are seeing here. It’s flowers of evil. Women don’t have an innate desire to reign over men. They seek equality. The same cannot be applied to men given that those in power are often unable to recognize the privilege they hold. It’s an atrocity not unlike stealing a classmate’s gym uniform without conscious malicious intent. It just kind of happened right?

Well, it’s not cool.

Kasuga

Of course, it’s not right to retaliate in kind as Nakamura does. At some point, enough is enough. Evil begets evil. The viewer never truly feels sorry for Kasuga. He deserves everything. We see Nakamura smiling and blushing. She’s in bliss with power and in that moment all seems right with the universe. Having never read the eponymous book, I believe it’s a cautionary tale.

It’s highly intriguing on how the rest will unfold. I had expected Kasuga’s confession at the end.

  1. I agree that we never quite feel sorry for Kasuga—this whole thing was prompted, after all, by his request to have Nakamura confess on his behalf, a total and inexcusable abdication of moral responsibility. For that he deserves some sort of punishment.

There is a sense in which what Nakamura prompts in this infamous scene is a sort of confession and penance—and, deep down, Kasuga needs it too. That’s why he is so ferocious when the repression finally comes undone. Of course Nakamura gets off on it too (she is most certainly sadistic in that regard), but in an odd way, what Kasuga does here is actually good for his soul. He is at last willing to be truthful about his depravity.

Of course this gets complicated later on (I’ve read ahead in the manga :-p) but that’s why they both look so, well, happy and relieved at the end.

There’s also a part about Nakamura’s desire to find a true non-conformist, but that gets played out better later on.

    1. YES. Nakamura has no interest for sheep like Haruhi for humans. Kasuga isn’t depraved. He’s morally bankrupt. Depravity connotes perversion which he’s only guilty of due to his immaturity to discuss it.

  2. This and Attack on Titan have really redefined the conventional shonen series. So glad both have received anime adaptations.

I remember the mangaka once suggested that everyone is a pervert in some way. We need to be a bit open about it and not hide behind clout like Kasuga. It’s a key message that he hopes readers and viewers will remember.

    1. THIS. We are all perverts in a sense, in our own way. Indeed why does society get to play arbiter on what is perverted?

  3. I can’t believe Kasuga is begging Nakamura to tell the world that he is a buruma fetish. That was just hilarious. Why can’t he just throw away buruma? Just destroy the evidence. End of story.

Crime and Punishment, that confession by Raskolnikov. This is also Kazuga’s confession, that messy classroom, I think Dostoyevsky could never conceive this kind of confession, not a murder, but buruma-dorobou (buruma thief). Is Nakamura a Sonya? From buruma to eternity.

I think Kana-chan can be my Sonya, I can confess to her that I’m a jersey fetish, I want the upper jersey of Kana-chan, since that part was sticking to her things-in-themselves! In turn what kind of fetish does she have?

Yes, in turn, what kind of fetish do girls have? We need a female version of Flower of Evil. That would make girls equal to boy, as equally perverted as us dudes! True feminism!
