Anime Diet Radio Episode 40 – Satisfaction Guaranteed [Possibly NSFW]

som-ona-hole-1.jpg

That’s right. Anime Diet Radio celebrates its 40th episode with…something to help along that midlife, or quarterlife, crisis–at least for some otaku. Let’s just say that 2D marriages may in fact become more “real” with these “cool devices.” That’s the subject of one news item–we also talk about Marvel and Madhouse’s ventures into a Wolverine and Iron Man anime, and also Hatsune Miku coming alive (or is she?). Finally, our roundtable wraps up the con season with some thoughts about how cons might be improved in the future. We especially welcome comments about this subject in the comments section!

We recorded so much material for this episode, the outtakes reel is nearly 20 minutes long! We share some stray thoughts about Anime Expo and other convention memories, the war between comic book and anime geeks, and, most of all, additional material about the SOM devices from News Item 3. Download it from the website, for all of you iTunes and feed listeners.

  1. Hey, it’s me again. Just spamming… I mean, making witty comments… on your podcasts. Five thoughts on the topic of cons, and one unrelated one.

1a. I attended AWA in 2007, and I recall that fansubs were screened. For instance, right before closing ceremonies, “Horus, Prince of the Sun” was shown. That vintage film isn’t licensed.

1b. Crunchyroll might benefit by screening its content at cons. By the way, I finally gave Crunchyroll’s pay-per-download series a chance. It worked relatively well. The first two shows I purchased were Pretty Cure and First of the North Star. Both worked on my computer and my iPod rather well.

1c. It sounds like you were attending anime cons in the mid-90s… according to other podcasters, that was a time when only fanboys showed up, and tape trading and bootlegs were common. Do you recall those days? Please feel free to tell any amusing stories.

1d. I attended a comics con in my local city just days ago. I noted that only half or so of the attendees were fanboys. There were parents, and there were girls. That said, do you have detailed thoughts about how congoers vary?

1e. What would I like at future cons? People who can provide quick, efficient tech support. I’ve seen panels suffer because the people struggled to get their video equipment to work.

    2. One final topic. The Cross Days controller sounds like an NSFW version of Ping from Megatokyo. Back when that webcomic started, there were very few dating simulations in English which weren’t complete trash. (Kinda like anime in the bad old days.) Even though Ping was said to be best suited to the raising sim Princess Maker, you couldn’t purchase a translation of that game.

Nine years have passed. Now there’s a slightly better selection of translated dating sims, visual novels, and eroge. Still barely any Boys Love games, and painfully few games for girls (aka “otome games”) in English. But Persona 4 was awesome, and I’m looking forward to Sakura Taisen 5. Also, fans have definitely stepped up with their own translations, and homemade games. To be more specific, even though you still can’t purchase any Princess Maker game in English, one now has a partial fan translation, and there’s similar fan-made games: Cute Knight, and Spirited Heart.

    Sorry if this rambled.

  2. – Hatsune Miku concert? Oh my! And I really like her voice because it is different from anything a human can do.

    – Ray. I would totally eat your bento you made.
    – Also, My ideal convention would have lots of GOOD cosplaying..versus that which I normally see. More artists and contests. But the main thing would have to be…lines that aren’t so long. My sister and I stood in line at Momocon this year for 5 hours to be registered. It was crazy but worth it.

    – Oh, and I live in Atlanta so I will be going to awa this year and it’s very exciting. I think the energy of that convention is very good.

P.S what is the music you played at the end of this podcast?

  3. One more thing…I think it would be a great idea if you guys compiled a list of all the animes people must see before they die or something because I don’t always know what to watch and I don’t want to miss out on any of the good ones. Just a suggestion!
