Update, 4:08 PM EST: The chapter marker timing problem in the AAC/iTunes version is now fixed. Redownload it if you got one of the early, incorrect versions. Also, apologies for the popping and blowing noises on my end of the audio–that’s what happens when you only have a cheap desktop mic with no pop filter! (Cue double entendres in 5, 4, 3….)

This is our final show for 2008! We talk about the troubles with Sakai’s library regarding BL manga, Keanu Reeves’ desire to play Spike in the Cowboy Bebop live action movie, and talk about the best and worst anime of 2008 in our Roundtable.

The episode begins with a little help for our friends at Anime Genesis, with whom we had a panel at AX 2008, and Dancing Queen at Howagirlfigures.com. They’re having a panel at this week’s Anime LA convention, January 3rd. Go check them out! (And stay tuned for details about our own panel coming at 2009’s AX…)

Well folks–that’s it for 2008. Happy New Year, everyone!

  1. The Tower of Druaga was a pretty enjoyable show. The first episode is an absolutely brilliant parody that should be seen by anyone even if they don’t intend to watch the rest of it. After that it slows down for a couple of episodes while they introduce the characters and the real story, then picks up again once they start climbing the tower. It maintains a nice balance of action and comedy, but the ending might make one go “FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUU….”

Another Gonzo show from 2008 that merits mention is Strike Witches. Not only was it another early experiment in simultaneous internet release like Druaga, it was Gonzo’s biggest success in DVD sales since Vandread. Although even that may not be enough to save the studio.

PS. Kamen no Maid Guy was sorely underrated.

  2. asdf: I agree about episode 1. I loved it, and I wrote about it too. However it gets a bit more “standard” after that and I got bored, so I stopped watching it (though I paid for every episode I did watch). Strike Witches isn’t my cup of tea, personally–though I was struck by the OVA long ago. I’m not surprised it was Gonzo’s biggest success, though. No Need for Pants sells!

You will be on our next mailbag feature! Look forward to it.

  3. Aww the year ends and so as kannagi,(and alot more).
Nyc rountable for this ep, finally found some guys talking about Kurenai, that was a really good one, still cant forget about the musical play episode there. I did read about an anime that will be released in 2009 i believe that is based on the world of kurenai (haha still not interesting) , well i think its the same writer.

DMC rocks! Well i watched it becaue of Ray’s blog , and yeah it might be the best comedy for this year although i can remember some pretty good laughs from Zero no Tsukaima.

Toradora and Kannagi were both surprising for me, well Chaos head as well but i didnt like how things ended up.
Hmm, no one mentioned 2nd season of Code Geass, but i think you did say that it is one of the best back in 2006. Does that mean you guys didnt like season 2?

  4. Nanii? Shock desu!!! I can’t believe you guys didnt even take a look at it. I mean im sure you guys at least read or heard someone blogging about that and over rating it or why Matt blogged ea ep. Well you guys were probably watching other stuff, i thin S1 is better than S2 though. Anyway, keep up the good work with your Podcasts!!! Hope there’s another Hollywood news item, its very funny when you guys make fun of the actors.
