My Anime List: Have You Seen What I’ve Seen?

Well, after incessant urging from Ray and numerous delays, I spent almost two hours compiling the definitive list of (approximately) every anime I’ve ever watched up to now. Wanna take a look? Here it is.

http://myanimelist.net/animelist/huangm777

The list is approximate for incomplete shows, because I sometimes couldn’t remember just how many I had actually watched. It was also hard figuring out which ones I wanted to indicate “dropped” and which ones were “on-hold.” As you can see, I have left unfinished many, many shows, many of them quite good. Some I really do intend to return to, some 50/50, some almost certainly not regardless of their merits. I also didn’t have time to fill in dates of watching, as a good many of the shows were shown in the first era of my fandom (1999-2002 or so).  I can usually pinpoint some of the ones watched since 2006 at least, when I reentered fandom with gusto and started this blog. Maybe I’ll adjust that sometime too.

In either case, according to the statistics, I have spent approximately 41 days (984 hours), or a month and a third, of my life watching anime. Thank heavens I’m pretty picky, because I wouldn’t count most of those as wasted days! But I look at the list just of the completed shows and I’m amazed. That’s an awful lot of TV right there…I’m a literary person and have sometimes been attracted to the idea that TV rots the brain and makes one passive. Here’s to this blog as a means to fight the passivity, I suppose. 🙂

  1. I have completed more than you. I am close to my 200th. Anyway, there are a lot of shows you dropped that you really should start watching. Cardcaptor Sakura? Come on.

    Anta baka!? O_o

  2. Awesome. I sent you my Friend Request. It’s great to have more people on MAL, really, especially after getting a bunch of us bloggers to sign up en masse and all. Think we’re Medium in compatibility or something.

  3. I’ve seen alot but, you’ve definitely seen more. I was sort of proud of myself when I could say I have watched a decent portion of those, including the dropped and on hold stuff.

  4. This is random but I spot this one in that list so…

As a fan of Bokurano, I’m going to have to give the heads up that the anime’s director dislikes the original manga, so the result may be very catastrophic for the manga’s fans, which I’m one of : d

I mean, the director flat-out said in his blog, ‘fans of the manga please stop watching the anime,’ or something along the lines…

Despite my disappointments I’ll try watching the rest of the episodes, I’ve only watched until episode 10…

  5. Great stuff – I’ll send you a friend request too if I haven’t already.

MAL is a great idea, although the option of a direct blog link for each title means that I’ll keep updating my AnimeSeen list too.

  6. I find it sad that you didn’t rate Air and Kanon highly and that you dropped Sola. Those three are some of my favorites. I found their stories to be fantastic, although I haven’t finished Kanon, and probably won’t for a while. It’s more just because Air and Sola are so great to me, that I’m certain I will like Kanon. Possibly an ignorant choice, but I will stand by it.
Other than that though, we have pretty similar tastes.
    Azumanga Daioh,
    Cowboy Bebop,
    Full Metal Alchemist,
    Furi Kuri,
Genshiken is on my to-watch list, but I haven’t been watching any anime at all recently. Been having those teen not necessarily angst, but teenage brain-not-fully-developed-hormones-raging type of problems,
    Ghost in the Shell,
Honey and Clover 1 and 2,
    Grave of the Fireflies,
    Kimi Ga Nozomu Eien,
    Neon Genesis Evangelion,
    NHK Ni Youkoso,
    The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya,
Was there any “deep” (as you talked about in a future post(that sounds eerie)(parenthesis in parenthesis is strange)) in the honey of Honey and Clover? I am pretty sure the four leaf clovers Hagu gave to Takemoto had to do with the time when they were all together looking for that four leaf clover earlier in the show. But what about the honey?

On a side note, that MyAnimeList is brilliant. I need to put up stuff.

  7. I forgot to add pretty much every Hayao Miyazaki movie.
    My Neighbor Totoro,
Kiki’s Delivery Service, I don’t quite remember the story, but I remember enjoying it,
    Princess Mononoke,
    Spirited Away,
    Castle in the Sky,
Howl’s Moving Castle, which wasn’t nearly as good as his other works.
Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind,
    The Cat Returns, and
I plan to watch Porco Rosso.
Miyazaki’s movies have this feeling to them. They aren’t things that can be going on in a background, you either are watching it, or it isn’t on. I’ve never been able to leave the room without pausing it, unless I’ve seen it enough times to practically memorize all their lines. I always feel like I might miss something, so I end up turning the volume extremely high. With the risk of sounding cheesy, his movies are of their own genre.

  8. @koji oe: I never claimed to be an anime master or anything. 🙂 Sometimes I drop shows not because of quality but because of a lack of time, and other things that come along. I have discovered over the years that very few shows–even good ones–can sustain a long absence, and that very few shows utterly COMPEL me to finish them in a short period of time. I fully admit that I have probably missed many worthwhile things that way, and I tried to note that for me the boundaries between “on-hold” and “planned to watch” and probably some of the “dropped” stuff too (especially anything I rated 7 or higher) is blurry. There’s just too much stuff out there! And in the specific case of CCS, I last watched that in the year 2001 (I think), and I remember it being kinda funny and just a little pervy, but not particularly captivating (yet), and there’s lots of other things I’d want to see first.

@Owen, Martin, totali: I actually had no idea that the ABC was going to invade MAL. I suddenly get all these friends requests from y’all. Are you sure we’re not a goose-stepping army? 🙂 Or was I just late to the party?

@smashingtofu: I would LIKE to finish Bokurano by the end of the year because it really ought to be in my running, along with Darker than Black, for one of the year’s best. I haven’t read the manga so I can’t have an opinion about that.

@somewhatnifty: Air and Kanon were, to me, manipulative and emotionally false. It was the reason why I was quite suspicious about Clannad, and surprised to the degree at which it wasn’t, at least not nearly as much before. Sola, on the other hand, I found boring. I tried watching a huge chunk of it one evening (eps 1-5), and it really didn’t have much momentum. When the character designs of ef reminded me a great deal of Sola, I was not impressed. I was also really, really wrong on that score. So as you can see I have my own unfair prejudices that I have to deal with.

And I agree that Miyazaki and probably everything Ghibli needs to be put in a different category altogether. At least Miyazaki thinks so; he hates the anime industry and insists his work shouldn’t be lumped with the rest of the industry’s output. The sensibility and aesthetic are totally different. I feel much the same way too about shows like Mushi-shi.

  9. …double post – _ —

Well, this whole categorization is just as senseless and dumb as music sub-genres in the first place

    Simply put, animation is animation

Stuff like Avatar completely gets rid of that dumb boundary anyway

  10. …triple post ….striiiiiiiiike *insert sayonara zetsubou reference here*

I’d have to partially agree with the kanon and air comment, if you can’t get past all that silliness that comes with the characters and the atmosphere, the series is a trainwreck.

  11. (o_O)? Well, well, well. I see a few you didn’t see, that I did! And that is,

    1. Power Puff Girls Z
    2. Sailor Moon,R, Super, Super S, and Sailor Moon Stars!

    4. Lovely Idol
    5. Noein

I can not believe you do not have Sailor Moon listed. How could you…..Same on you! BOOT TO THE HEAD!!

Just remember this……Sailor Moon was one of the very first long running Anime’s ever aired in Japan that went 200 ep’s. WOW thats a lot. It’s so funny how no one out there ever talks about Sailor Moon, as if it’s got kudies or something.

Also, what about “Power Puff Girls Z”, Oh don’t tell me you never watched that too. Once you go Zeee, you never go back. I watched this Anime and fell in love with it. Much better then the one one Cartoon Network.

And last, but not least is, “Lovely Idol” I don’t beleve you never was that one too. Come on!!!! Shame on you (o_O)! This Anime is so damn cute it will make your table tip over. In short, It’s a Anime about cute lovable Anime gals trying out to be the nest Japanese Idol. HOT HOT HOT.

And what about the Anime, “Noein” I watched all 26 of them on HDTV when it aired aired a few months back in english. Now this Anime is great. Loved every one of them.

And this Anime is new too me. It’s called “Iron Kid” Also known in the U.S. as “The Eon Kid” I started watching both the Koren and American version and now hooked on it. hehehe Got to love those CGI’s. I think Ally is cute too. Shes very smart. (*_*)
