Apparently, for this 39th episode of Anime Diet Radio, we have a lot of stories about otakus themselves: otakus losing weight, pulling stunts with stars, and getting ruder by the minute! Because we all love to make fools of ourselves, right? But yes, those are the contents of our news items for this episode: the Otaking writing a diet book, an otaku blogger drinking Minorin’s bottle, and a roundtable about whether otaku have gotten less considerate in recent years. Oh, and there’s a story about how some Buddhists in Japan are using moe to draw new converts, a mixing of tradition and, uh, a study of modern visual culture if there was one.
We also have a slightly different mailbag this time–we had only received one comment on the previous episode when this was recorded (yes, this was late–Comic Con got in the way), and so we not only answer that but also some comments from our Indecent Otaku Comedy Hour panel at Anime Expo. Thanks for coming out and seeing us there! For the ones that got away we’ll answer your mail in the next episode.
We’re also proud to note that we are finalists for the Parsec Awards for “best anime podcast”! The Parsec Awards are given for the best speculative fiction (sf/fantasy/horror/etc) podcasts in various categories and is sponsored by the big SF convention in Atlanta, DragonCon. Thanks for listening and supporting us for the 2.5 half years we’ve been on the air and for helping make this one of the best anime podcasts on the net! If we win the big prize, we’ll be sure to thank you all.

This is not only just the new episode of Anime Diet Radio–it’s a final pitch to come to our AX Events: the Indecent Otaku Comedy Hour TOMORROW at 9 AM, LP3 (live stream available), and to buy our zine at Artists Alley table D24! In the Roundtable we talk a bit of the work and process that went into making it all happen. But there’s still time to actually go and check it out. So come–and if you can’t come, watch the live stream, on this very website!
There are also a few news items–about otaku bride preferences, the Evangelion 3rd movie, and Lucky Star uniforms in a real town in a real school. But all that isn’t as important as to drive home the point that we want to see you at our panel tomorrow morning! And buy our zine!

Anime Diet Radio returns! Sorry for the slight lateness. In this very special episode of Anime Diet Radio, we have a special guest for an interview–Chuu Aino, aka “Director-chan,” of the SoCal Sera Myu Sailor Moon Movie Project! She’s here to talk about the fan-made musical film of Sailor Moon that is currently in production and due out in 2010. It was a great interview, and we decided to not only offer the edited version in this podcast, but also have the full unedited (and full of Sailor Moon otaku nerdfacts) interview available for download too. It was a privilege talking to her and we wish the project all the best!
Of course, we have our usual news items, this time about schoolgirl fashions being influenced by anime, a government romance anime about jury duty, and an otaku pretending to give up the faith. Plus, there’s always the mailbag section as well.
A few minor technical hiccups occurred along the way–a very small bit of Ray’s intro was missing, in which he accused me of not being as funny as I could be, hence the exchange later on. :) There was also very slight crackling during the interview as well, though some of it is more apparent in the uncut version than in the edited version. Apologies for all that!

Your thoughts have summoned him from hell! Anime Diet’s own hellspawn, Johannes Krauser III, makes an inglorious reappearance on Anime Diet Radio, as we talk about the Detroit Metal City live action movie, respond to your, uh, critiques, and talk about the usual strange news items about the PM’s anime museum, the legs of a Gundam, and “boy ranches” for Japanese women.
As if that weren’t enough, Krauser’s appearance shook the earth! This episode was recorded in the midst of LA’s 4.7 earthquake…and we have the sounds to prove it, as Jeremy (“from Redondo Beach”) lived close to the center of it all. Hear his things tumble and clatter to the ground! See our outtakes file, which also includes a discussion of Swedish pop and Norwegian wood. Har har har!

Well–this is the special, raw, and extra long sitcom edition of Anime Diet Radio, in which we discuss Johnnies of all kinds: and not just the one mentioned in our roundtable topic, that memorable show Eden of the East! For one, there’s a news story about a real Negishi-like pop star with a Johnny-shaped haircut; another one about an anime exercise video that might strengthen your Johnny muscles along with your legs and your arms; and finally, one where a random stranger wants to blow the birthplace of Lucky Star to bits with a bomb.
This episode was edited by Ray, our illustrious co-founder, as I didn’t have the time or energy to do anything other than write these show notes as I always do. All props go to him for lightening my load this week! He would like to mention that this episode is “best listened when drunk and even better stoned.” Perhaps those of you who care to do just that can fill in this nice, innocent, seminary student about what that experience is like? :)
Errata: since the recording of this podcast, we’ve learned that the pop star in question in News Item 3–Hideki Kaji–is in fact the one who sings Negishi’s song in Detroit Metal City and is definitely the basis for that character. That’s thanks to an ANN article we somehow missed as we checked that story out. Also, in a fit of liberal arts majorness* at the end of the Introduction, I proclaim that this was episode 34 when, in fact, it is episode 35. I’m just in denial about this podcast’s age, I guess.

Have you noticed that Anime Diet Radio has been talking a bit more about weird Japan news and not as much about anime lately? Well, this (rather late, I know) episode changes all that. Every story and the roundtable topic are, at last, actually all related to anime for a change! Whether it’s talking about Keanu Reeves’ Cowboy Bebop (and what Sunrise has for an escape clause should it turn out…badly), Evangelion boxer shorts, or a man whose sole desire in life is to get together with a Pokemon, it’s a return to our roots. We even talk about an actual show for the Roundtable, Asu no Yoichi–again, rather late, I know. This was recorded before the last season had quite ended.
Which means, alas, that many of your listener comments were missed on this episode–we only had 5 at the time we recorded this, and we know there are 4 more that have arrived since then. Thanks! We will answer them in the next recording, which hopefully will be very soon.
A couple of notes: first, thanks to Ray for helping out with the majority of the sound effects for this episode. I think you’ll find them…striking. :) Second, apologies for the clipping on my voice. I have got to learn to set levels properly while I record, though for some really odd reason, I can’t monitor them when I’m using Audio Hijack Pro for recording. (Anyone got any tips on how to do it with that piece of software? Mac only, I know…)

This late episode, recorded a while back, may be tuneless–as might be expected when seiyuus since punk rock songs–but it is a lot LOUDER thanks to the Levelator software! We’re louder than bombs, as another band might say. And we’re going to bombard you with news about Taiga on city posters, teachers forcing girls to be maids, and Dutch wives in the trash bin.
But the center piece–or the horror show, as it were–is our Roundtable about the Puncolle Seiyuu Punk Rock Collection of songs, in which seiyuu desecrate cover various classic punk and alternative tunes. The results, in which we present a good number of clips, are either horrifying or horrifically funny.
Anyways, enjoy this latest outing from Anime Diet Radio. Leave your comments below; we will do our best to answer them on the air!
PS: sorry we didn’t get your comment in time, asdf–but know that the massively improved clarity of our voices is due to your suggestions and links. Seriously–thanks so much!

Those of you who listen to our podcast know us for our, well, occasionally edgy humor. This is a warning to all those who are young and/or impressionable that this episode goes straight over the edge and into the nether regions where no sexual innuendo has gone before. At least for us.
Some of this has to do with our news topics–we not only talk about the Haruhi-chan “Nice Boat” debacle, we also talk about the strange phenomenon of Viagra-fueled men dying in love hotels (in my best This American Life/Ira Glass impersonation), and a 74-year old Japanese male porn star who’s still going strong. As reported by CNN, of course. If they can do it, so can we…right?
Finally, we answer your mail, and then have a roundtable discussion about the season’s best new show, Rideback.
NOTE: The iTunes/AAC version doesn’t have images or chapters because, for some reason, I can’t get it Soundtrack Pro to export the enhanced version correctly. Sorry, iTunes fans.

(15:38–21:38) News 3: 74 Year Old Japanese Porn Star
(30:35–44:55) Roundtable: Rideback
The news about Haruhi-chan’s initial botch is here (1), but now, of course, you can watch actual episodes on the Kadokawa Channel on Youtube. But the original Nice Boat video has been preserved here (2).
Weird Asia News has been one of our main sources lately and you can find the Viagria story here (3) and the 74-year old porn star story here (4), which includes a Youtube link to the CNN story about him (5).
Many of you out there would love, I’m sure, to be this guy right now. This is Aiko, a Japanese-speaking android created by Le Truong, who has gotten one step closer to achieving the dream of otakus everywhere–and this is the subject of one of the news items in this 31st episode of Anime Diet Radio! We also talk about the Naked Man festival in Japan, answer some mail, and talk about what has changed in anime since 2006 for our Roundtable discussion.

What? Is this Freddy Mercury, or is it an imitator, singing our anthem for the new year? This is the first episode of Anime Diet Radio for 2009, and with it, we have some fresh new music and the return of the mailbag section, as well as wacky news about Tentacle (G)rape, the Evangelion snowboard, as well as the Japanese space toilet. Oh, and we talk a bit more seriously about the legalization of Crunchyroll, and why Ray’s mad that it region locks him out of the fun.
Thanks to everyone who commented on the last episode. We definitely want your feedback and your thoughts, and we’ll read the mail we get on the air! Just leave a comment on the post here and we’ll get to it in the next recording.

–See Crunchyroll’s current programming, which lists all the country restrictions, over here (4). Yes, I put my money where my mouth is and have signed up for a $7 monthly membership–now I can watch all of Gintama. Also, there are actually a few shows that are in fact available to Europeans, but the majority are still US/Canada only.
Update, 4:08 PM EST: The chapter marker timing problem in the AAC/iTunes version is now fixed. Redownload it if you got one of the early, incorrect versions. Also, apologies for the popping and blowing noises on my end of the audio–that’s what happens when you only have a cheap desktop mic with no pop filter! (Cue double entendres in 5, 4, 3….)
This is our final show for 2008! We talk about the troubles with Sakai’s library regarding BL manga, Keanu Reeves’ desire to play Spike in the Cowboy Bebop live action movie, and talk about the best and worst anime of 2008 in our Roundtable.
To your favorite anime characters, of course! That’s the subject of the news items of this episode Anime Diet Radio, in which we talk about the petitioners for legalizing 2D marriage, and the outrage at Nagi possibly being “sloppy seconds.” The talk gets a little, uh, intense, so it’s marked with an “Explicit” tag. In the Roundtable, though, we finally calm down and talk about One Outs, Michiko to Hatchin, Kurozuka, Chaos;Head, and the impending cancellation of Dattebayo’s Naruto fansubs.
The bad news is that since this episode was recorded, the contract job I mention in it has since ended, and I’m still waiting to hear about whether I’m going to be hired by them. So keep your fingers crossed.
