Anime Diet Radio 24 Outtakes (MP3) [7:16m]: Play Now | Play in Popup | Download (3)In the days between cons–between Anime Expo and Comic Con, which starts tomorrow–we raced against time, and terrorists, to bring you the 24th episode of Anime Diet Radio! (Sound only, this time.) We just have a couple of news items: the new season of Black Lagoon, and the weird shenanigans happening at Studio Bones about Full Metal Alchemist and Darker Than Black sequels. Our Roundtable discussion is about the difficulties and the triumphs of our first ever live panel with Anime Genesis.
For the first time in a while, too, there were some outtakes worth keeping. There’s a story there about how I could get Shokotan’s number next time and about one other panel glitch in which we (sort of) shafted our beloved friends from Makenai, the Japanese cover band whose lead singer Pamela won AX Idol this year. Consider this yet another apology from us. :)
It’s great to be back on a roll with Anime Diet Radio. See you at Comic Con this week!
Show Agenda

More like Anime Diet Video is what it is! This, officially our 23rd episode, is the video of the panel we held at Anime Expo, Friday, July 4–uncut with all the boring parts intact. :) I will be soon putting up a Youtube-sized highlights reel. But for those of you who want to see everything you missed, here it is!
We had an awesome time together, though it was really difficult and we faced obstacles in coordinating and putting this together on time; there were massive technical difficulties even 5 minutes before the panel started. For one thing, the panel before us refused to leave until 6:45, giving us little time to set up. If you were waiting outside at 7PM for the doors to open–that’s why. We also found out only when we got there that there is no audio feed available from the computer to the speakers; we had to literally put a microphone to my laptop speakers to get Ray audible.
I’ll also be the first to admit that some of my routines didn’t quite work. I didn’t have a lot of time to prepare everything, and the Powerpoint didn’t work as well as I had hoped because the show order was shuffled at the last minute. The video above includes the most relevant slides, however, so you can get an idea of what, roughly, the slides were supposed to do.
Enjoy, everyone!

Anime Diet Radio and Anime Genesis: Live at AX 2008!
Posted by Mike on 26 Jun 2008 at 1:19 pm | Tagged as: Anime Diet Radio, Anime Expo 2008, Conventions, Podcasts
This is the big news I was promising: together with Benu of the Anime Genesis Podcast, we are doing a live show at Anime Expo 2008! The show will be on July 4, 7 PM, in LP4–next week. (See the official schedule; it’s listed under “Anime Genesis Live.”) Together with Benu, Ray, Jeremy, and me will be doing a lot of our usual schtick that we do on our podcast, but with a lot of surprises too…
We are really excited about this, and we want you all to come! If you’re going to AX, come show your support for our podcast by packing out LACC 411. And if you have a podcast yourself…we warmly invite you to put this promo in your next pre-AX episode:
So tell your friends, and tell your acquaintances, and even your enemies: we are going to be invading AX this year! And this is just one of the many things Anime Diet has planned for this year’s Expo. Stay tuned for a description of more liveblogging coverage, possible guest interviews, and of course, more videos!
Anime Diet Radio Episode 22 - In The Navy

Anime Diet Radio 22 [46:47m]: Play Now | Play in Popup | Download (194)No, we haven’t all joined the Navy and become Village People. We just recorded a new episode of Anime Diet Radio, that’s all! This episode, we talk about the US Navy’s efforts to placate inform the Japanese people about their mission via manga, as well as Mamoru Oshii’s best attempts to be like George Lucas in his remake of Ghost in the Shell. We also answer your comments and talk, seriously for a change, about the recent Akihabara massacre. It might even have something to do with that other great show this season, Kure-nai.
Excuse the lack of sexy resonance in my voice–I was back home on the East Coast and didn’t have my fancy mixer and microphone with me, so I had to make do with a headset mike.
Show Order
- (00:00–04:53) Introduction
- (04:54–11:54) News 1: Ghost in the Shell remake
- (11:55–24:20) News 2: The Navy makes a manga
- (24:21–32:18) Mailbag
- (32:19–45:45) Roundtable: the Akihabara Massacre
- (45:45–46:47) Conclusion
Show Notes
- –OP: “Kimi, Meguru, Boku” by Motohira Hata (OP to Itazara na Kiss)
- –ED: “Sore ga, ai deshou” by Shimokawa Mikuni (OP to Full Metal Panic Fumoffu)
- –You can see some before(1)-and(2)-after(3) pictures of the “improvements” made to the new Ghost in the Shell. More info available at Anime News Network(4).
- –The Navy manga is available in English here(5), and Japanese here(6). More info here at ANN(7).
- –Errata on the Navy manga story: the lowest possible rate(8) for Navy enlisted men is indeed “seaman.” No snickers, please. :) The Kitty Hawk is stationed in Yokosuka Naval Base, not Okinawa. Ensign is the bottom rank for officers, though, as stated. Also, the serviceman charged with rape recently in Japan is a Marine(9) rather than a Navy sailor proper (the Marines are a branch of the Navy, however), and the girl he allegedly raped is 14 rather than 12. Shows what I know about the military!

Art and Soul 5 (MP3) [9:35m]: Play Now | Play in Popup | Download (64)Here’s the fifth episode of Art and Soul, my anime and religion/ethics audio column! This one covers a phenomenon that I’ve seen in so many anime–the phrase “I will never forgive you!” How does that square with Christian ethics, which demands forgiveness even when it’s very hard, even of enemies? Is that really an evil phrase? Tune in to find out. (A transcript follows after the cutaway.)
Show Notes
- –OP: “Gunbuster Theme” by Kouhei Tanaka
- –ED: “Never” by Seira (OP for Kaiba; I’ve included the whole song because the words are unusually appropriate for this column.)
- –Bible reading from the New International Version.

Anime Diet Radio 21 (MP3) [59:04m]: Play Now | Play in Popup | Download (140)Anime Diet Radio, at long last, gets a toast as we reach our 21st episode! In this episode, we tackle: strange Evangelion inspired foods, Haruhi season 2 information, and in our Roundable Kaiba, Library War, Chiko Heiress of the Phantom Thief, Amatsuki, and Himitsu: The Revelation. We also follow up on the comment we got from “scythe” in the previous episode.
(For the record–my own first alcohol experience was when I was 21. It was, indeed, with sake. So the title has special significance or me!)
Show Order
- (00:00–04:37) Introduction
- (04:38–13:01) News 1: Eva Foods
- (13:02–22:45) News 2: Haruhi Suzumiya, season 2 info
- (22:46–35:16) Mailbag
- (35:17–58:02) Roundtable: Library War, Kaiba, Chiko, Amatsuki, Himitsu
Show Notes
- –OP: “Over the Future” by the Karen Girls (OP to Zettai Karen Children)
- –ED: “Swinging” by Muramasa (OP to Tower of Druaga)
- –This episode contains our official farewell to Fred, who covered Mononoke last year for us. Fondest wishes in New York! (The introduction makes more sense if you know that Jeremy and I were at his farewell party the evening before the recording. And singing karaoke. Very badly, in my own case.)
- –The original news story regarding the Eva promotional food items is at Anime News Network (1).
- –The article about Haruhi Suzumiya’s next season is also at Anime News Network (2).
- –The comment we answered is at this post (3). Chake, we got your comment after we recorded this episode. Thanks, and we will comment on it in the next episode.

Art and Soul 4: Anglican Vampires, Oh My!

Art and Soul 4 (MP3) [6:51m]: Play Now | Play in Popup | Download (92)The anime, religion, and ethics audio column returns after a long hiatus! This time, I’ll be tackling the burning question: why is the Hellsing Organization so insistently Anglican? Does it have anything to do with the real Church of England? Or is it all part of an elaborate Japanese fantasy?
This is not a very serious article. Please don’t put me on a heresy trial!

Anime Diet Radio Episode 20 (MP3) [57:05m]: Play Now | Play in Popup | Download (207)Note: the above does not constitute an endorsement of Kanokon as a good show.
And here we are, at the big 20 for Anime Diet Radio! This episode does have some issues, though. Some of our information has turned out to be wrong about various subjects discussed in here–namely, for instance, that Code Geass is popular (it’s getting terrible ratings) or that no Pizza Hut product placements have appeared in R2 episodes. Not that that matters when we also talk about Kamen no Maid Guy, Soul Eater, Itazura na Kiss, Special A, and The Tower of Druaga. And Gackt’s pet dog. And the exact details of the people who were watching anime in class were flubbed too. It’s still a funny story.
And, of course, we didn’t make it into any finalist rounds for the Anime Blog Awards–we missed the top 5 team blogs by one vote. And apparently our extraordinary measures (listen to find out) on other blogs had no effect. Drat. Must use more efficient means next time!
Please, also, forgive the poor sound quality of my voice, which clips a lot. I did some compression tricks to mitigate it somewhat, but my recording levels were simply too high. I bought a mixer to rectify that problem permanently, as the clip light on my cheapo Audio Buddy simply didn’t tell me when it was clipping, and Audio Hijack Pro’s built in clip meter also doesn’t work.
Show Order
- (00:00–07:02) Introduction/Banter
- (07:03–16:03) News Item 1: Code Geass Ep. 3 Ending Leaked
- (16:04–24:07) News Item 2: Gackt’s Dog gets an anime
- (24:08–36:45) Mailbag
- (35:46–56:13) Roundtable: Kamen no Maid Guy, Itazura na Kiss, Special A, Tower of Druaga, Alison and Lilia, Soul Eater
- (56:14–end) Conclusion
Show Notes
- –OP: “Triangular,” by Maaya Sakamoto (OP to Macross Frontier)
- –ED: “Never,” by Seira (OP to Kaiba)
- –Anime News Network explains (1) what happened to cause the Geass ep. 3 leak. At this time, it also appears that images from Episode 5 (2) have also been leaked! Not that it matters, since it’s already aired in Japan.
- –Gackt’s dog getting an anime is explained at ANN here (3) and if you read Japanese, you can find out more about Ener here (4).
- –The story of watching anime in class is at Furu Anime Panikku (5) and I incorrectly stated that the show that got the guys all excited was Kanokon. It was To Love-ru. Which, in retrospect, may not have made such a difference considering they are both fanservice shows!

Anime Diet Radio Episode “L”–The Lost Episode

Anime Diet Radio Episode L (AAC) [62:35m]: Play Now | Play in Popup | Download (309)
Anime Diet Radio Episode L (MP3) [62:35m]: Play Now | Play in Popup | Download (253)As promised, this is the infamous unreleased version of Anime Diet Radio episode 19. It was a great episode, truth be told, easily standing up to any of our previous ones. Even if it was recorded on February 17…which makes the three news sections about the Claymore licensing, Gainax hiring (deadline: Feb 29), and Akihabara English maps very, very out of date. You might still enjoy the roundtable discussions about Mnemosyne and Strait-Jacket, which as OVAs were not as subject to the sentence of obsolescence compared to their TV counterparts. It was still very Winter 2008 season when this was recorded.
As a “lost” episode, this was not as heavily edited as some previous episodes, so it is lighter on the music and sound effects–which turned out well for the main roundtable discussion, actually. But enjoy the true rawness that is as fresh as a survivor crawling out of a plane on a suspiciously deserted island.
We should be back on track with a regular release schedule for audio content very soon, now that the site is stable once more. See you soon!
Show Order
- (00:00–02:07) Ira Glass explains it all
- (02:08–06:22) Real introduction
- (06:23–15:45) News 1: Claymore licensed by Funimation
- (15:46–22:50) News 2: Gainax hiring for new project
- (22:50–33:47) News 3: English Akiba map
- (33:48–End) Roundtable on Strait Jacket and Mnemosyne; Conclusion
Show Notes
- –The “Ira Glass” introduction is mostly a joke for all one or two of you out there who also listen to “This American Life,” (1) which in my opinion is the best show on National Public Radio (2). I tried to imitate host Ira Glass’s nasal voice by literally pinching my nose while talking. BGM: “Magnolia Theme” by Jon Brion, which is used many times in the actual TAL radio programs.
- –ED: “Dango Daikazoku” (ED for Clannad: because a show devoted to sexiness and pimps needs to end on a kid’s song)
- –Funimation’s page for Claymore does not appear to be working on their website. However, you can read about the news here at ANN (3).
- –Gainax is no longer hiring, as the deadline for applications was Feb. 29th. A description of what they were looking for was on ANN as well (4).
- –You can download the English Akiba map here (5).
