(<em>Shounen Jump</em> happens to be the most popular manga magazine for both men and women in Japan.) It's understandable why you might think it was aimed first at girls, though; <em>Hatsukoi</em> is also mostly told from the perspective of the females, and is somewhat more believable than most.  It's like how <em>Honey and Clover</em> was originally aimed at 20-something women, but it's almost entirely told from a male perspective, and very accurately too. (I lost count how many times I said, "I know exactly what he's talking about.") At the end of the day it doesn't really matter who it's aimed at--it's all about the storytelling, writing, and drawing, gendered audience be damned! And, alas, <em>Hatsukoi</em> was prematurely terminated as a manga so it looks like there will not be more. Some of the characters could be even more interesting if they were fleshed out. Because as a woman I thought that the story line(?) was directed more to females. But I guess they use the fanservice to lure you boys into watching it? That is their trick then!
