Too true. I'm a sucker for the vulnerability she delivers in her performances, and it works beautifully here.

Other winning points for the show include how IG is playing it which is refreshing compared to how shoujo works like this are generally treated. It's the fairly speedy, yet non-intrusive pacing, alongside the more character-centric writing that works largely to its benefit.
Breaks away from the recent trend that we as viewers must identify with by default attitude that many shows fall into. (Just like you, GM. I too am easily turned off by this recent Entitlement Syndrome that many shows have adopted.) It's nice to see a series embrace what it is like to wish for the Chrysalis to crack in the most socially restraining environment imaginable. It's hard not to cheer Sawako on.

And the casting of Mamiko Noto is a masterstroke, imho.

Here's to the rest!

rayyhum777: do you mean episode 4? Looks like some nasty rumors are about to start, yes...

wintermuted: you know that's one thing that has grown into a pet peeve of mine in anime, that we are often expected to take the angst right away rather than getting to know a person first. And well, if it gets intense, then I think I'm going to be satisfied. It's done a superb job of making me care for Sawako at least.

RadishTM: agreed. She's the most relatable character to come along in anime for a while, especially if you're a nerd/outcast/introvert/weird person in general. The situation may be idealized but the emotions are real, and at the end of the day that's what counts.

Will Readagain: please do. :) Thanks.

Brilliant post, I agree with all points.
Out of the fall season anime that is currently airing, this is by far is the most enjoying for me.
That's because of Sawako's down-to-earth/quirky character which rocks and that I can totally relate to the environment she is currently in.

For me, this has easily taken the place of the gap left for me after the better section of Lovely Complex ended. Another shoujo that took good, even-ended shots at what are ostensibly dorky characters. As for Sawako, it's just great that the animation doesn't hold back on showing us exactly what has made her so awkward in the first place.More often, series don't even bother and expect us to sympathize without reservation.

Definitely sharing the love of this series here. The manga is fantastic, and wondering just how much of it will remain. If it keeps at it, yes, it's going to be intense.
