MushroomSamba: I've seen that, actually, and I've also seen Fumoffu--one of the funniest shows ever made. But KyoAni hasn't done the FMP material for 4 years now and since then, it's all been moe anime. Yes, even Haruhi--though that was both original and interesting. Andrew F.: Aha! You are right. I read this comparison article for reference, and yup, it looks like it's a reconstruction more than a redoing. That explains a lot; thanks for the info.

My understanding, supported by the five or so minutes that I watched, is that episode one is a re-cut version of the original OVA with new voices and sound effects. That’s why it looks so unremarkable.

I can’t say I’ve got high expectations for this series, since I didn’t care for either of the OVAs, but I’m enough of a KyoAni fanboy that I’ll be watching it anyway. -_-;;
